I have been told that salah doesn't mean so called "namaz" and namaz is not made obligatory on Muslims. Furthermore, he says that, the takbeer with which we start the prayer saying "Allahu Akbar" is grammatically wrong. The word "Akbar" is not used by Allah for Himself in the Qur'an. In Arabic, word Akbar is used as comparative degree therefore, it cannot be used with Allah. Could you please answer this with Qur'anic proofs?
I am on a visit to the UK for about five months. Here in the UK the day and night hours these days (July) are such that one offers one's Isha prayers at 11 p.m. and the Fajr prayer timings start at 2:15 a.m.What should one do in such a situation regarding Tahajjud Prayers because you hardly get to bed when Fajr prayer timings start. Secondly, the Ulama here (I am told) have issued a…
Is it appropriate to ask an imam about his "creed/belief" to determine if one should follow him in congregational prayer?
Could you please advise me on qaḍā prayer? Are we allowed to offer the delayed prayer with any of the five obligatory prayers? Also please explain if we can offer the left over prayers any time or it is necessary to offer a particular prayer only that time in the coming days.
How can one determine the Qiblah direction while praying in a moving ship?
I have a question about the salah. If the Prophet (sws) offered salah in different ways then how can Hanfis, Hanbalis, Shafi‘is and Malikis insist on their set ways? Is not it a bid‘ah?
I understand you say that the salah and other religious practices which form the basic content of religion have been taught by the Prophet (sws) to the entire generation of the Companions and the Conpanions transferred it to next generation (i.e tabioon). Then why there existed differences in the mode of salah among the successors or the succesors to the successors.
Why do we say in salah the following as if the Apostle (pbuh) is alive and present with us?
I want to learn whether there is any difference between the prayer method for male and female worshipper. I read a book by Mufti Taqi Usmani. He wrote that there is a difference between the procedure prescribed for males and that for the females. If we visit UAE and other Arab countries we sees that both men and women offer the prayer the same way. Please clarify.
Is it necessary to keep one's shalwar (lower garment) above one's ankles all the time or only when offering prayers?
Usually I attend the Friday Congregation in the mosque in my locality. Last Friday I went to offer Friday Prayer in another mosque in my town. The imām, during the sermon, said that a person who doesn’t attend three consecutive Friday sermons is no longer regarded as Muslim. I am greatly disturbed to hear this. Last year, during a visit to Karachi, I did not go for Friday Prayers for the fear of suicide bombers.…
My question is that when I am in prayer various thoughts come to my mind and disturb me. How can I pray with concentration?
I cannot pray five times a day. However, I feel pain for orphans, the poor and the needy. I think for their betterment and do what is in my capacity. I think I am doing better than those who pray five times a day but neglect these people. They engage in corruption while they earn etc. Now would you please guide me whether my approach is acceptable?
Please explain the following narrative regarding a woman passing in front of the one who is praying. Does it really nullify one’s prayer if a woman passes before them?
‘Abdullah Ibn Samit reports on the authority of Abu Dharr that the Prophet (sws) said: ‘When any one of you stands for prayer he is covered [from the passers by] if there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle. In…

- Lack Of Punctuality In Praye
I live and work in Canada. It is getting very difficult for me to be punctual in Salat that leaves unrest in my heart all the time. Meaning from the start of Zuhr time to end of Asr time I can perform both the Salats. Same for Maghrib and Isha. Please…

- Mosque And Jāmi’ Mosque
While reading about Mosques, I found two different names for Mosques - Masjid and Jami‘. What is the difference between the names? Is one of these types of Mosque "better" or "more important" than the other type? If so; what makes them more important? Are they representative of different schism in Islam, for instance Sunni and Shia names?
- Number Of Compulsory Units (rak’at) In Each Of The Five Daily Prayers
I recently read an article by Dr.Khalid Zaheer. He wrote about the number of compulsory raka’ats in each of the daily Prayer. The article can be reached at: http://www.khalidzaheer.com/qa/198. Now, this was quite different from what I was taught.
1. I would request you kindly to clearly mention how many raka’ats are compulsory in each of the daily Prayers and also the Jumu’ah Prayer.

I am almost a bedridden patient for last five month, barely able to go to washroom once in a day. During night I have to use bed pan, which sometimes spoil my clothes. I want to offer my prayers but feel that I am not clean enough to offer prayers. Please tell what should I do?
- Obligation To Offer Salah In Congregation:
Why does Mr Ghamidi apply the divine law related to the Messengers to the congregational prayers? He seems to hold that the narratives ascribed to the Prophet (sws) directing the believers to compulsorily attend the prayers in congregation pertains to his time only and it is no more applicable afterwards? I mean what are the various intrinsic evidences within the narratives which point that the law should be applied?
- Offering Only The Fard Ṣalāh
I have been watching your show in USA. I will appreciate if you can answer my following questions.

- Offering The Missed Prayer In Congregation
For some reason I missed my Zuhr prayer. When I got my first opportunity and reached the place reserved for prayers in the office premises, people were offering the ‘Asr prayer in congregation. I offered my Zuhr prayer with the congregation and later offered my ‘Asr prayer separately based on the information that no individual prayer can be offered during congregation and that during the battle of Khandaq when the Prophet (sws) missed prayers, he…

- Offering The Salah Seeking Worldly Gains
Let us suppose someone is worshipping Allah but his intention when praying is not that may Allah save him from the hellfire and enter him into the paradise. His intention is that if I worship Allah he will be with me and help me in all the problems of my life. Then will he get the reward of his deeds on the Day of Judgment. Or what if someone prays to Allah to get closer…
- Our View On Witr Prayer
I totally disagree with your point of view on witr prayer and I respectfully submit my reservations over it. Indeed it was the first opinion about Witr I ever heard from anybody else. It raises many questions in my mind regarding it and have totally surprised me. I am astonished with your views about the Witr, my queries are as follows:
1. Tahajjud is not a Farz prayer, and there is no compulsion over its offering.…

- Place Of Children In Congregational Prayer
What is the Shari’ah guidance regarding children in the mosques during prayers? We have been to Umrah twice in the last 18 months and no one asked our children to move to the back row during prayers in Makkah and Medinah. In Makkah we even were in the very first row or two and no one asked to move them. However back at our local mosque in USA and, in fact, in Karachi as well…
- Prayer During Menstruation
Allah Almighty has commanded us to perform salah in all circumstances. One is obliged to pray even one is on the death bed and even one has najasat on and one cannot find water. What about salah for menstruating women? The only thing Allah Almighty says about menstruation is in 2:222 and there too there is no mention of not praying during the cycle.
- Prayer Timings
The Holy Qur'an mentions that there are only two obligatory prayers. (Surah Bani Isra’il (Q 17) mentions the Morning, dalūk al-shams and the tahajjud prayer. It also explains that tahajjud is a nafl (supererogatory). This means only two prayers are obligatory. Similarly Surah Hūd (Q 11) mentions tarafi al-nahaar and Surah Ṭāhā (Q 20) uses the words ānā'a al-layl.)However, the ahādith tell us that the Holy Prophet (sws) has commanded the believers to pray…

- Praying With Hands Reclining On The Sides
I have read the following Hadith and commentary on it on a website:It has been forbidden (by the Prophet) that one prays while reclining his hand on his sides. (Bukhari No: 1162)According to the commentary given, there are two sides of everyone, the left and the right. Since keeping hands on one of them is a sign of arrogance, this is prohibited in Salah. The commentator has also quoted Al-Bayhaqi as reporting that…
- Problem With Prayer Timings
1. I live in Stockholm Sweden and here in summer time i.e. during the months of June to August the day and night timings are very odd. The sun sets at 11pm and then rises again around 2 am. - Purification For Prayer
I have got IUD (intra-uterine device) which causes intermittent bleeding for anywhere between 3- 6 months to settle in. As this is not the monthly bleeding, a couple of people said that if you bleed for any other reason, in Islam, it is then considered an illness. You can start to pray and recire Qur'an. Is this view in line with the Qur'an and the Prophetic teachings?
- Questions About Witr
I would like to ask you some questions that have been in my mind for a while and I am very confused about them. Regarding Isha Prayer, I have heard that there are 4 Sunnah, 4 Fard, 2 Sunnah, 2 Nafl, 3 Witr and 2 Nafl. In other daily Prayers offering the fard is enough. However, in Isha Prayer offering just fard is not enough. For it is obligatory to offer 3 Witr. Without offering…
- Quranic Ruling Regarding Inebriation
According to a verse in the Quran you should not come closer to the prayers in an intoxicant state. This implies that at the rest of the moments you can stay in such state. While as per other verse intoxicant is haram at all moments. Is this a contradiction?
- Raf’ Al-Yadain

- Raf’ Yadayn In The Prayer
What is the difference between the viewpoints of Deobandis and Ahl-hadith on the question of raf'-yadayn?
- Raising Hands During The Prayer
According to many reliable reports appearing in the most reliable works of Hadith like Sahih of Bukhari and Sahih of Muslim the Holy Prophet (sws) used to do Raf‘u’l-yadayn (raising hands up to one’s shoulders) when starting the prayer, going to Ruku‘, standing from it, and standing after saying Tashahhud. So I am confused as to why we are not supposed to do Raf‘u’l-yadayn on other occasion besides starting the prayer when the Holy Prophet…
- Recitation In The Optional Prayer
Why do we recite surahs in only the first two rakats while offering the farz prayer but in all four while offering the sunnah prayer?
- Reciting Basmalah In The Prayer
I have two questions. 1 - I asked you earlier about Bismillah in the beginning of Surah Fatiha. You gave a good answer but you didn't clear my doubt about whether it is necessary to recite it in the beginning of a prayer! And whether the prayer is acceptable if Bismillah is not recited ... since it is the part of Surah Fatiha.2 - Suppose I went for the Isha'a Prayer and I missed…

- Reciting Surah Fatihah While Praying In Congregation
1. When praying behind the Imām, especially during Fajr, Magharib and Isha do we have to recite Surah al-Fatiha in the first two rakahs? If yes, then do we have to recite quietly along with the Imam or we wait for the Imam to finish reciting Surah al-Fatihah and then recite the surah when he is reciting another surah?2. When we wake up late for the Fajr prayer, we have to wait for the…

- Shortening The Prayer While Travelling
I want to clarify my doubts about the qasar Prayer during travel. My questions in this regard follow:1) If a person travels from Lahore to Gujranwala (Around 63 k.m), will he start to pray qasr Prayer as soon as he embarks on the journey?2) When a person travels from Bahrain to US, he gains nearly one day due to the time zone difference. In this case should he pray for the day…
- Slah Of The Shi’is
I have been researching all the differences between sunnis and shiites. Can you tell me how different are there ways of praying? Why do certain people view their kalima to be wrong considering a small addition at the end? I want my concepts to be clear as the masses view shiites as non-Muslims. Is there any relevant proof in document (a fatwa) that says otherwise about the shia school of thought is right in their…
- Start Of The Menstrual Period
I was at a mosque for intermediate Arabic class and a feminine question came up between us. One of the sisters is from Kazakhstan, a born Muslim; however, due to the Communist rule by once the Communist Russia, she has no knowledge of the Islamic customs, not even of Salah. So we are teaching her how to pray; we were trying to explain to her about when to pray and when one should not pray…
- Status Of The Tarawih Prayer
I have some questions regarding the Tarawih prayer that is offered during Ramadan. Did the Prophet Muhammad (sws) offer Tarawih prayer throughout Ramadan? Did he mention any specific reward for it? I read somewhere that the Holy Prophet (sws) did not offer the Tarawih prayer every day because he did not want people to think that it was an obligatory act. If this is true, what was the maximum number of days Muhammad (sws) prayed…
- Sun Rises Between Two Sides Of Head Of The Devil
I need an explanation of the last sentence of the hadith mentioned below. How authentic it is?
Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, "When the (upper) edge of the sun appears (in the morning), don't perform a prayer till the sun appears in full, and when the lower edge of the sun sets, don't perform a prayer till it sets completely. Please put light in the light of shia argument by Holy Qur'an: Chapter 17, Verse 78). 2-If bidah in every religious practice is not in a way as sanctioned by Prophet (sws) so how would you justify the religious practices sanctioned by Hazrat Umar? - Totally Abandoning Obligatory Salah
Is it true that any believer who does not pray is not a true Muslim? I have read on a few websites that this is true can you clear up this confusion I have.
- Unanswered Prayers
Many of our prayers are not answered in this world. It may be due to wisdom of God almighty but is it a satisfactory answer? Tassawauf have kashaf and karamat which are visible and are experienced through our senses so that can give us some faith and satisfaction. But can any intellectual debate regarding our unanswered prayers satisfy us?
- What Does Salah Mean?
We find that during certain prayers we remain silent even though the Qur'an directs us to utter our prayers in a moderate volume (neither too loud nor too soft). Some would argue that verse of the Qur'an is referring to Salaat the system of following Allah's commands closely. And it means call people to Allah's way in a moderate manner (not too aggressively neither too meekly).
